Charitable status granted to HAPC UK

5th August 1991

On  July 9th 1991, the name of HELP A POOR CHILD was formally entered in the Central Register of Charities.  This is a signifacant achievement for the Charity and one that has been sought after, following a decision by the management committee last year, to abandon our status as a non-registered charity.

Being on the Register is help in several ways:
1. It gives publicity to HAPC and may assist its work or attract donations and bequests as well as requests for help.
2. It gives trustees information about other charities in the same field or which may carry out work, which is useful for the charity to know about.
3. The Register (and this is perhaps the most useful aspect for the charity itself) provides conclusive evidence that the registered instution is a charity in law.  This helps in obtaining grant aid and relief in connection with income tax, value added tax and general rates.

PR Secretary Reynold D’Silva said that “the Registration of HELP A POOR CHILD is a breakthrough, which will see an incredible number of benefits realised for the charity”.   He added “Providing we can commit ourselves to another active year campaigning for funds, there is no reason why we should not double our income in the next twelve months.  The poor and needy children will benefit most from this registration and he added “We will now be able to respond that much more quickly to requests for funds made by our committees in Goa, Bombay and Calcutta.  Education and Medical care will reach even more children”.

A mention must be made of our legal advisers Carr & Co who have been actively working with the Charity Commissioners to secure our registration.  Their efforts ensured that we fully complied with the requirements of the Commissioners.  In addition Mr. Anthony Carr and his staff have undertaken all HAPC legal matters FREE OF CHARGE.  We are, of course, extremely grateful to Carr & Co for this kind gesture on their part.
